For the 2012 Convention (THE place where academics in language and literature departments get jobs), the Modern Language Association which hosts the conference decided to sponsor two full panels on what Bethany Nowviskie calls "the alt-ac track." "Alt-ac" comes from the Twitter hashtag #alt-ac, and it expands to "alternate academic," meaning alternate careers for academics.
